Sunnyvale, TX
For several years, there has been community interest in creating a downtown in the heart of Sunnyvale, Texas. Goal 5 of the Town's 2017 Comprehensive Plan, "Establish a walkable, pedestrian-friendly Town Center,” reflects the continuing importance of this to the community.
While there is ongoing enthusiasm about creating a downtown in Sunnyvale, there is apprehension and uncertainty about potential impacts on this community, which prides itself on its rural and small-town character. ASH+LIME conducted extensive virtual and in-person outreach to assess these issues, build consensus around goals, and work through various realistic scenarios. The goal was to work with the community to better help them define and reach its desired goals - while creating policies to address concerns.
A+L’s recommendations were intended, as much as possible, to support the needs and desires of citizens with a wide variety of perspectives. Any downtown in Sunnyvale should be sensitive to the context. At the same time, the desire among many citizens for improved community amenities is clear. For these reasons, the recommendations for Sunnyvale’s downtown were focussed on gradual community-led changes over time.
