South Alley Road

Like many small towns in Texas, Terrell had been working to reimagine their downtown, and the city contracted ASH+LIME to evaluate the feasibility of turning an alley into a walkable, pedestrian friendly, complete street. South Alley Street was caught between the back of main street shops which would continue to use the alley for loading, HVAC, and waste removal, and a busy rail line.

ASH+LIME recommended a single grade drive and sidewalk surface to create more flexibility between modes of transportation. This would allow for outdoor retail space, public art, and strategic placemaking, while still accommodating large trucks when needed. Permeable pavement and water retention gardens wick water away from building foundations, while adding to the pedestrian centered design.
